Fast Economic Growth — Gains or Losses?

There is much discussion today about whether fast economic growth is desirable. And people’s views on it are varied.

Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that our society is approaching① certain limits on growth. These include the fixed② supply of natural resources, and the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment. People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are still many poor people. They maintain that only continued growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life and provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization③.

There is certainly some truth on both sides, yet neither provides a satisfactory answer. To my mind, economic growth should meet the needs of the present without compromising④ the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, which holds the marrow⑤ of Sustainable Development⑥. In China, both the economic development and the protection of natural resources need granting equal priority to. As such is the case, Sustainable Development is the one-way route to follow.
